If you've been thinking about killing yourself, your social media might give you away. An initiative called the Durkheim Project will use artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to identify common words and phrases among those who might be contemplating suicide.

The program, which launched on July 2, currently targets only veterans, who have disproportionately high suicide rates. Veterans opt into the Durkheim Project, which installs an app on computers, iOS and Android devices. These apps keep track of what users post and upload it to a medical database. A medical AI monitors the data in real-time, picking out patterns that might lead to self-harm.

The Durkheim Project app monitors content from Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, in addition to storing information from a user's mobile device. A database at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth University will keep track of users' locations and text messages, and will not share any information with third parties. Additionally, the system will be guarded by a firewall to ward off would-be hackers.

Innovation: Better hands may help robots grasp meaning

Two recent studies show that roboticists are applying some fresh thinking to the building and operation of robot hands, and a third suggests why the work is so important – it could be vital for domestic robots learning how to be useful around the home.

Silicon Valley start-up Willow Garage put its PR2 robot on the market earlier this year. It sports two gripper-equipped arms and has demonstrated its ability to use them to fetch a cold beer or fold a towel. But it relies on sophisticated sensors and extensive pre-programming to know how best to grasp an object and how hard to squeeze to maintain a firm grip without causing damage.

Siddhartha Srinivasa at Intel Labs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and colleagues think they have found a way to do it without the pre-programming. At last week's International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Taipei, Taiwan, his team discussed using Amazon's Mechanical Turk to help robots pick things up.

AMT is an online service that uses a human workforce to carry out tasks that are simple for people but difficult for computers and robots to complete unaided. It's already been used to help lost robots find their bearings, but Srinivasa's team used it to ask people to annotate images of objects the robot comes across. By adding outlines of objects, and grouping objects, the humans helped the robot to pick up a range of objects including a milk carton and a box of Pop-Tarts.

Too smart?

This may be applying more intelligence to the task than is really needed. Eric Brown at the University of Chicago and colleagues have just developed a "dumb" robot gripper that can pick up a range of unfamiliar and even delicate objects with no prior knowledge of them.

"Our gripper is simpler because it does not need tactile sensing, a computer, or precise vision, other than the need to know the general location of the object," says Brown, who developed the device with a team from robot manufacturer iRobot, based in Bedford, Massachusetts, and the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

The "hand" is simply a rubber bag filled with small glass spheres that flows around the object to be picked up. A pump then creates a vacuum in the bag, jamming the spheres in place and hardening the robot gripper around the object. Because the gripper moulds itself around the object before hardening, its force is distributed evenly across a large surface area, meaning it can pick up even delicate objects like raw eggs without crushing them, says Brown.

Ikea test

Robert Platt of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology says the robot gripper would be great for picking up difficult objects like small nuts and bolts on an assembly line, for example, or turning a door knob in your home – but he doubts whether a dextrous hand alone will lead to more intelligent robots. "It wouldn't be able to put together a piece of Ikea furniture," he says.

The members of a Europe-wide project called Paco-Plus might disagree. Co-ordinator of the project Tamim Asfour at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany says picking up and handling objects is central to robot learning. The strategy should sound familiar – such manual exploration is used by babies to learn about their bodies, the objects around them and their environment.

"Our robots are able to explore the environment and learn about objects and the actions they can apply to them," he says. One of the project's robots – Armar III – has now gleaned enough knowledge from its kitchen-like environment to learn how to open a dishwasher door, pick up a cup, turn it upside down and put it into the machine.

Incredible Technology: How to Engineer the Climate

Greenhouse gases are heating up the planet, spurring plenty of controversy about whether — and how — to stop pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. But some scientists are looking at another option, one they often see as an emergency brake: Geoengineering.

The idea behind geoengineering is to combat man-made climate change with man-made solutions, mostly involving ways to pull carbon out of the atmosphere or to deflect the sun's rays so the carbon dioxide has less heat to trap. The ideas are largely untested and highly controversial. They also involve tackling major technologicalchallenges, some of which may be too great to overcome.

"There's no point in pretending that it's the technology that is going to save the world when it might turn out to be completely impossible," said Hugh Hunt, a senior lecturer at Cambridge University who researches geoengineering. [7 Wild Weather Control Ideas]

Among the tech challenges and solutions under investigation are materials to withstand strong atmospheric winds, self-powered ships that can sail the seas while being steered by satellite and even space-based solar shields that would act as sunshades for the planet.

Climate challenges

From a technological standpoint, the flashiest geoengineering scheme is space-based. By shooting small, reflective spacecraft into orbit, humans could theoretically mirror the sun's warmth back into space. (Another recent proposal would use asteroid dust to shield Earth from the sun.)

These orbital shields would ease climate change, because carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases warm up the globe by trapping heat in the atmosphere. If less heat penetrates in the first place, there would be less to trap.

However, space-based schemes are the least likely to be implemented, said Ken Caldeira, a climate scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University. Just to compensate for the rate of increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, you'd have to build something like a square kilometer, or 0.4 square miles, of satellite area every half hour or so, Caldeira told LiveScience.

"The technical challenges are so formidable to put it off the table for the century," he said. [7 Ideas to Geoengineer Our Planet]

Slightly less dramatic, and more feasible, are schemes that would spray aerosols, or tiny particles, high in the atmosphere.

Cloud seeding ships could spray ocean salt-water into the atmosphere to help create white, reflective clouds.
CREDIT: John MacNeil

These aerosol plans are based on nature. Volcanic eruptions spew sulfur dioxide gas high into the atmosphere, which combine with water vapor and form light-reflecting particles. Just like the theoretical space shields, these particles keep Earth cool.

A variety of methods could be used to get these aerosols into the atmosphere, from spraying them out of airplanes to one plan that would use a balloon tethered by a 12.4-mile-long (20 km) hose pumping the particles into the stratosphere.

Hunt, who works on a balloon-aerosol research project known as SPICE (Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering) said that the biggest question is whether it's possible to get enough particles into the stratosphere via a balloon-lofted hose to make a difference. Even if it is, he and his colleagues are dealing with dizzying challenges. The atmosphere is fairly calm 12 miles (20 km) up, Hunt said, but from the ground up to about 6 miles (10 km), it's very turbulent. The balloon has to be tough enough to travel through this bumpy region on launch and recovery, and the hose must be able to withstand the twisting and turning winds constantly.

"It's a bit like having an umbilical going down to a deep-sea diver," Hunt said. "The water is really still down at depth, but the ocean surface may have really big waves."

The team is looking at composite materials, including Kevlar, to make the hose lightweight and strong. They're also looking to engineer a hose that isn't circular, but rather wing-shaped and aerodynamic, so it catches the wind less.

A British climate-cooling balloon experiment would have sprayed water into the atmosphere to test its effect on reflecting sunlight.
CREDIT: Hugh Hunt, SPICE project

Other challenges include building pumps to move aerosol particles 12 miles vertically. And the researchers would have to be able to track the movements of the hose to keep it out of the way of aircraft — a challenge complicated by the fact that tacking on GPS or other devices makes the hose more vulnerable to turbulence. Fortunately, Hunt said, digital camera resolution and computer processing have advanced to the point where using photography to track the hose can work, even though it will be practically invisible to the naked eye from a short distance away.

Spewing seawater

Moving lower in the atmosphere, one proposal would involve self-propelled ships spewing up fine sprays of seawater to brighten marine clouds. These clouds already play an important role in cooling the planet, said John Latham, an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. [Images: Amazing Clouds & How to Read Them]

"They reflect about half of the sunlight that lands on them," Latham told LiveScience. If that sunlight hit the ocean surface, only about 10 percent would reflect, he said.

By modifying these natural mirrors with very small droplets with a high surface area, researchers could possibly engineer the clouds to bounce back 55 percent to 60 percent of the sunlight that hits them, Latham said. Modern ships already do this to an extent, as the particulate matter let off when they burn fuel seeds clouds, increasing their brightness and creating visible tracks on satellite imagery where ships have been.

Instead of using polluting fuels to seed clouds, Latham's plan involves tiny droplets of filtered seawater. Edinburgh University researcher Stephen Salter has developed small vessels, which would be about 40 feet (12 m) long, powered by rotors driven by the wind. These Flettner vessels, named after their original developer in the early 1900s, would have underwater turbines to generate the electricity needed to turn seawater into a spray. Specialized filtration and nozzles would ensure that microscopic sea gunk like plankton didn't jam up the works. The ships would be steered by satellite, Latham said.

If carbon dioxide doubles from today's concentrations in the atmosphere — a situation most climate scientists agree would have major impacts — about 1,500 seawater-spewing Flettner vessels spaced 150 miles (241 km) apart could offset the warming, Latham said.

The ethics of geoengineering

There are other geoengineering proposals floating around, including the possibility of seeding the oceans with iron fertilizers to prompt phytoplankton blooms, which in turn take up carbon from the atmosphere and sink to the bottom of the sea. What all of these schemes have in common, however, is controversy.

Even scientists keenly interested in geoengineering tend to say they'd rather not see their ideas used.

"You'd only consider doing it if it was a real emergency and there was no other solution," Hunt said. "But I do worry we're getting close to that situation."

Even if the technical hurdles can be overcome, political and ethical issues might make geoengineering unfeasible. Even small-scale tests of geoengineering plans would be difficult to govern, said Alan Robock, a professor of environmental sciences at Rutgers University.

"There has to be some limitations on doing it so it doesn't just expand and get to a size that would be dangerous," Robock told LiveScience. What's more, he said, short-term weather and climate are so variable that it would be hard to tease out the effects of any geoengineering effects from the larger background of weather ups and downs.

Complicating the issue, a geoengineering test would almost certainly become a scapegoat for any bad weather occurring around the same time, Robock said. Even if there was no reason to suggest that a test caused, say, a drought, public outcry would be enormous.

Nevertheless, virtual testing of geoengineering using climate models should be done, Robock said, in order to collect information on benefits and risk. Hunt, too, argues that too little information on geoengineering is a great danger.

"If your house is on fire, that is not the time to start designing a fire engine," Hunt said. "You'd like to think the fire engine had already been built and designed and tested before your house is on fire. Likewise if the Earth turns out to be in serious difficulty from climate change, at that point in time that's not the time to start looking at climate engineering. It'd be too late then."

Seeing the world through Google’s eyes

Google Glass: is it a step too far or the next must-have geek gadget?

In the United States around 10,000 so-called explorers have bought the glasses and are currently trying them out.

The wearable device with a tiny screen in the top right of your right eye’s vision lets you talk and send messages without the bother of using your smartphone. You can film, take pictures, get directions and much more.

Swiss scientist Christophe Moser explains how they work: “It is a pair of reality-augmented glasses with two principal components. One is a holographic film which is placed in the glasses, the other is the projector which is linked by cables – later by Wi-Fi – to a computer which projects an image on the holographic film and which is reflected on the retina.”

In Lausanne, as other labs, augmented reality is well developed. Now researchers are working on making the components smaller and enlarging the field of view. With Google Glass you can check out maps and so on even though the actual screen is very small.

The Chinese glasses by Baidu should be similar to Google’s.

And the same concerns remain – concerns over privacy, over being filmed without knowing, over private data being collected – knowingly or unknowingly – about face recognition software and so on.

Of course, with CCTV everywhere and smartphones in just about every pocket, it could be argued we have already lost whatever privacy we once possessed.

The British activist group Stop the Cyborgs is campaigning for very strict controls around Google Glass and is providing special signs that would designate an area as Google Glass free.

Meanwhile, Google’s claim that it will not need to alter its privacy policy to reflect the impact of the new product has been met with scorn by US authorities.

A machine which can read your mind

“We have developed so called brain-computer interfaces which allow the user to control different devices and programmes without hands, by means of the user’s thoughts.”

That is how Christoph Hintermüller of the Project Management and Research team at g.tec Guger Technologies sums up a machine which can quite literally read the mind.

It is intended for disabled patients, and the system made up of electrodes which sit on the scalp translates user intentions into electronic commands.

“A brain-computer interface captures various electrical impulses from the head of the user, and decodes them into specific tasks and actions,” continued Christoph Hintermüller.

That allows the user to play an online computer game, hands-free. The user selects the commands by simply looking at the blinking arrows on the screen. The frequency of the flashing is reproduced in the brain cortex and read by the electrodes.

“As soon as we have understood the electroencephalography patterns produced by the groups of neurons in the brain, we can map the brain activity to any commands for any device, like a television or a motorised system for the home,” said Arnau Espinosa Manzanal of the Research and Development department, g.tec Guger Technologies

Developed within a European research project, this technology makes home electronics more accessible. A user can navigate through various on-screen menus by simply focusing attention on the commands.

This way even severely disabled people can compose text messages to communicate with others in social networks on the Internet.

With further improvement, this system will allow to remotely control robotic assistants and even personal transportation vehicles such as electric wheelchairs.

“The system will be further developed to easier integrate with many more systems and programs, and also to use additional electrical and mechanical impulses from the whole body, because some patients still have residual motor functions and they’re comfortable also using them, and this system can be designed to include such signals,” concluded Christoph Hintermüller.

Portable gaming revisited: The 3DS and Vita matter, but for different reasons

Nintendo's 3DS and Sony's PlayStation Vita have taken on very different roles since their respective launches. Here's why you should still care about the ever-changing portable gaming landscape.

by Jeff Bakalar and Scott Stein

The 3DS hits its stride
We have a rule: if a game platform has 10 good games, it's worth getting if it's affordable. That "rule of ten" means the Nintendo 3DS is finally worth investing in, if you care about great portable Nintendo games. The game library's filled out at last, and it's now, without a doubt, the best Nintendo platform of the moment. Game for game, it might even be the most impressive platform so far in 2013.
Despite not having the stellar battery life of the Nintendo DS before it, the 3DS is backward-compatible with DS cartridges and has a library of digitally downloadable games that make it a pretty enticing summer travel toy. It might just become your favorite gaming platform, too.

Top reasons to get a Nintendo 3DS

It's always been the same story for the 3DS. Nintendo needed to just make the games it does best and make sure the 3DS had plenty of them. Basically, the good games on the 3DS are all first-party titles, with the exception of a few good third-party games -- but that list is growing as the platform gains some popularity.
There are already great Nintendo 64 ports (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox), Wii ports (Donkey Kong Country Returns), sequels (Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Mario Kart 7), and franchise staples (Super Mario 3D Land). There are a number of Virtual Console games from the Game Boy, NES, and Game Gear eras. And there are a lot of unheralded small-scale indie games in the eShop.
The 3DS won't ever be what the DS was before it, but its extra graphics punch, its analog stick, and a collection of classic games make it more of a gamer's handheld. Enjoy the games, and know that Nintendo will at least keep the system stocked with its core titles. Don't expect more than that, and you'll probably be as happy as we are.

PlayStation Vita: Indie mecca
When it first launched, Sony's PlayStation Vita portable console seemed to have all the angles covered. It debuted alongside a great lineup of titles and Day 1 access to digital-only software on the PSN Store.
However, what played out over the next year was nothing short of disappointing. While the system had the processing chops to produce breathtaking graphics, a dearth of compelling software froze the platform in its tracks. Month after month seemed to roll by and there was nothing worth playing on the Vita.

Great indie reasons to own a PlayStation Vita

All that has started to change and one could argue that the signs were there all along. The Vita is becoming the go-to portable platform for great independent games. First, the console's solid performance is perfect for the characteristically less graphics-intensive games that come out from indie developers. The Vita's memory card requirement is a drawback, no doubt, but the limitations work out with the smaller size of indie games.
And just as we write in praise of the Vita's indie chops, Sony has opened a new "Indie Channel" in the Vita PSN Store, highlighting all of the best titles -- most of which are under $10 -- from independent game developers.
A few things to keep in mind: indie games are released on their own schedule, different from what normally is a Tuesday release for other games. There's also a fair number of PSN games that offer PS3 and Vita access simultaneously. Some games even allow you to sync saves across both platforms so you can continue your game on the go. Finally, being a PlayStation Plus member is starting to pay off. Sony offers plenty of indie games at a discounted price, plus a few titles for free once you join.

Computer mouse inventor Douglas Engelbart dies.

by CNN Staff

(CNN) -- Douglas Engelbart, whose invention of the mouse transformed the way people interact with computers, has died.

Engelbart died Tuesday night at his home in Atherton, California, SRI International -- the research institute where he once worked -- said in a statement. He was 88.
"Doug's legacy is immense — anyone in the world who uses a mouse or enjoys the productive benefits of a personal computer is indebted to him," Curtis R. Carlson, SRI's president and CEO, said in a written statement.

Decades ago, Engelbart came up with the idea we now know as a mouse.
His first prototype, which featured a carved out wooden block, wheels and a tiny red button, looks quite different from the sleek plastic designs now seen in homes and offices around the world.
A radar technician during World War II, Engelbart worked at the Stanford Research Institute during the 1960s. It was there that a vision of people sitting in front of a video screen, interacting with a computer, came to him.

"I knew enough engineering and had enough experience as a radar person to know that if a computer can punch cards or print paper, it can draw anything you want on a screen," he told CNN in 1997 after receiving a $500,000 prize for American innovation.

Engelbart invented and patented what he called the "x-y position indicator," receiving a $10,000 check for the invention. He told CNN he couldn't recall who on his team had decided to call it a mouse.
At the time, it wasn't easy to convince fellow scientists to follow his vision, Engelbart said. But he persisted.
Later, he went on to found the Doug Engelbart Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to boosting the collective ability to solve complex, urgent problems on a global scale.

"Sometimes I reflect on how naive somebody has to be in order to get visions -- and plug away at them -- that ultimately proceed, and how many other people with visions that are as naive just fall off the cliff," Engelbart told CNN in 1997.

In addition to the computer mouse, Engelbart's work at SRI from 1957 to 1977 helped develop tech innovations such as display editing, online processing, linking and in-file object addressing, use of multiple windows, hypermedia, and context-sensitive help, the institute said.
"Doug was a giant who made the world a much better place and who deeply touched those of us who knew him," Carlson said. "SRI was very privileged and honored to have him as one of our 'family.' He brought tremendous value to society. We will miss his genius, warmth and charm."
Engelbart is survived by his wife and four children.
CNN's Chuck Johnston contributed to this report.

Jailed Facebook teen finally getting day in court

(CNN) -- A Texas teen who's been jailed more than four months for a Facebook comment he made during a video-game argument is finally getting a day in court that could let him go home. Justin Carter, who was 18 when he was arrested, will appear in Comal County (Texas) District Court on Tuesday, July 16, for a bond hearing, according to his lawyer, Don Flanary.Flanary told CNN he will argue to have Carter's $500,000 bond, which his family cannot afford to cover, reduced.Flanary, who is working the case for free, met with Carter for the first time on Tuesday. He said Carter is not doing well, and his family says he has been placed on suicide watch.

"Justin is in bad shape and has suffered quite a bit of abuse while in jail," Flanary said in an e-mail. "We will likely bring out these issues at the bond hearing." He did not elaborate on the type of abuse claimed by Carter, who is now 19.In February, Carter and a friend were arguing on Facebook with someone else over the online video game "League of Legends."His father told CNN that the other gamer called Justin crazy and his son responded with sarcasm.According to court documents, Justin wrote, "I'm f***ed in the head alright. I think I'ma (sic) shoot up a kindergarten and watch the blood of the innocent rain down and eat the beating heart of one of them."Jack Carter said his son followed the claim with "LOL" and "J/K" -- indicating that the comment wasn't serious.Authorities say someone reported the comment -- which came about two months after the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut -- and Justin Carter was arrested February 21 on a charge of making terroristic threats. In Texas, that's a felony that carries a sentence of up to eight years in prison.Police originally thought Carter lived with his father in Austin, Texas, at a home the arrest report says is 100 yards from a school. They later learned he was living in New Braunfels, between Austin and San Antonio. The Austin Police Department declined to provide CNN with additional documents related to the case. The Comal County District Attorney's office, which is prosecuting the case, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Carter's case has stirred support online.A Change.org petition by his mother, calling for his release, had received more than 43,000 digital signatures as of Wednesday morning."Justin's a good kid," Jennifer Carter wrote on the petition. "He wouldn't hurt anyone, let alone a child."She wrote that he has been "assaulted a number of times" in jail and that no weapons were found during a search of his home. The American Civil Liberties Union tells CNN it is monitoring the case.

"We are all concerned about safety in our schools, but that's not what is at issue here," said Rebecca L. Robertson, legal and policy director for the ACLU of Texas. "The First Amendment protects a person's speech -- even speech that is in poor taste -- as long as it is not a true threat.

"Justin's online comment might have been distasteful and thoughtless. But, if the facts as reported are true, his comment is an objectionable joke rather than an actual threat, in which case the Comal County District Attorney is prosecuting protected speech. That's a dangerous precedent."
